Capitol Reef National Park encapsulates and protects from development the Waterpocket Fold, a naturally formed crease in the Earth's surface believed to have been formed by the collision of continental plates millions of years ago. The 100-mile-long fold runs from Thousand Lakes Mountain to the Colorado River, and the 378-square-mile park offers many ways to explore the beauty and power of this amazing natural feature. A nice scenic drive lets visitors see part of the park by automobile, but for any more extensive tours a good hiking trip is required. Sights like amazing sandstone domes, dramatic cliffs and other rock features make the park a trilling place to explore. There are organized campgrounds as well as free backcountry camping (with a permit) that lets visitors spend two or more days exploring the park.
Open daily year round.
Entry fee (7 day pass): Vehicles $5; Individuals $3.
